The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Competitors will gain the option to contest certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
