Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
