Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which included plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.
