Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
